KDE konqueror - not showing image previews
Submitted by Steve on May 25, 2008 - 4:11pm.One of those "blindingly obvious with hindsight" problems.
Problem: When browsing all our digitized images I noticed that many were not showing up as preview icons. Entire directories of images would have no previews, yet others would have 2 or 3 of 30+; others would have all.
Weird.
Google-Fu wasn't remotely successful. But did lead to the right place.
Konqueror ; Settings ; Configure Konqueror...
Scroll down to "Previews & MetaData"
Underneath the box of protocols to choose from "Select Protocols" is a horizontal slider.
"Maximum File Size". It's not obvious what this means or does from context or name. On my system that was having the issue, this was set to 1Mb. Increased to 5Mb and the problems went away.
Obviously, with the benefit of hindsight, what this actually means is the Maximum File Size to enable a preview to occur. Doh!
Old Photos Update
Submitted by Steve on July 27, 2007 - 5:27pm.I've never been able to get half decent scans of all our old, and not so old, slides.
With a recent printer replacement, I went for one of the scanner/printer combo's. Pretty nice machine. But it can actually do half decent slide and negative scanning too. Well this isn't a review. It's a check out the updated pics story!
All are named "slides..." and down the bottom of their respective categories.
Enjoy!
Corbin's 4th Birthday
Submitted by Steve on June 5, 2007 - 9:59pm.Been more than a bit slack with getting photos up lately. So here's a burst from April through July this year.
Mostly of Corbin. Dur. Who else...
The last three were taken on the weekend just gone. Up on top of the hill just behind our place. For those non-Australians, yes we really have seen Kangaroos there. Was about 2 years ago now, and they were about 5-10 metres away from us as the three of us walked around the area. With all the construction around there since, pretty fair to state that they are unlikely to be there again. Still. There are heaps down on the golf course below. All the common Eastern Grey that is so prevelant across the ACT.
Enjoy!
Scripted Multiple Resizes With ImageMagick
Submitted by Steve on May 23, 2007 - 8:00am.The problem: A friend had taken a screen capture and was having difficulties getting it to display nicely in WordPress.
An interesting challenge I thought to myself. I know I can use all sorts of funky resize filters with ImageMagick, but which one would work best? A few clumsy minutes later, I had an answer, but that in turn raised another. Just editing the command history is fine and dandy, but there must be a better, faster, more efficient way!
Surely I can script something that will generate all the variants in a single go???
Third Deck Approaches Completion
Submitted by Steve on April 2, 2007 - 8:59pm.(Re-posted to get back to where I was. Post the hosting provider change.)
*Finally*!
Managed to be sufficiently recovered from the spate of colds we've all had, to put the final push to getting the main deck finished.
Earlier this afternoon, I put the first coat of oil on. Would have put a second and third but (a) didn't realise how little decking oil I had when I started and (b) consequently had just enough to get the 1st coat done. Tomorrow nights task for two and three I suspect.
I'm currently: stiff, sore, *very* tired and smelling slightly of turpentine.
As I'd left the deck in a near finished state for several weeks, the decking had started to weather. So required a solid belt-sanding. Which is the main reason for the first three of the prior complaints.
Just a couple of pics to show off:
For those that care or are curious? The timber is that recommended by the landscape architect: "Swan River Red". Bought from Bunnings of all places. Natch of the 3+ Bunnings stores in Canberra, the only one that stocks the stuff is on the far side of the city. Personally, I reckon the timber is Jarrah, albeit by another name.
Sure is tough enough to be Jarrah. I pre-drilled the decking nail holes, but did try nailing through one of the off cuts out of curiosity. Ha. Penetrated maybe 5 mm before bent nail.
Enjoy!

And Yet Another Photos Update
Submitted by Steve on August 12, 2006 - 3:15pm.Whew. Busy Busy Busy.
We have: December 2005, Brisbane Trip 2006, Rock Star & Third Brithday Starts, and Third Brithday.
All Corbin photo's. We don't take photo's of much else anymore for some reason...
One of my personal favorites is this one of Corbin playing Tuxpaint on his SuSE 10 Linux PC. Corrupt 'em young is all I can say. Perhaps frustratingly, it was incredibly easy to get a Linux PC built that was 3 year old proof vs a Windows XP PC. Not least being all those education games that require full administrator access.
Sigh.
A long overdue update to the Photo Galleries
Submitted by Steve on August 10, 2006 - 11:01pm.Plenty more to come. Oh yeah, you'd better believe it.
But to get started here are:
Snowing 2005Â just to totally freak out all the rellies in FNQ.
and November 2005
Enjoy!
21st June 2005 - More Pics
Submitted by Steve on June 21, 2005 - 9:46pm.And some more pics as promised.
First off, we have a single series of Corbin "assisting" with the construction work in the garden. Appropriately titled "Corbin the Builder"
Next up, a new Album of pics so you can see the latest views of the garden construction work. This is not to be taken as a sample of my skills for the availability of same for my father-in-law. Or open to criticism.
Enjoy!
Latest Pics. From May/June '05
Submitted by Steve on June 20, 2005 - 10:13pm.Some new pics freshly printed and/or downloaded from the digital camera.
The first batch show the post haircut Corbin.
The second batch demonstrate Corbin's skills in assisting Dad with baking Amaretti biscuits. As well as Corbin's skill at sweeping dirt. And finally Corbin shows off his skill at using the spare mattress as an imitation trampoline.
Enjoy!
